Success Story

Wofford College creates a culture of operational visibility

Background

Wofford College is a small, undergraduate liberal arts institution in South Carolina. After installing 168 meters on campus as part of a sustainability initiative, the team at Wofford decided to implement an energy dashboard for the residence halls, the senior village apartments, academic buildings, administrative buildings and private residences on campus. Their goal was to have a tool that anyone on campus could use, from facilities staff to students. They quickly realized savings from BuildingOS. Measuring and collecting the data has led to a variety of energy management opportunities, including improving cooling and heating set points in unoccupied buildings, shifting building uses to optimize savings, and engaging campus members in energy reduction.

This storyboard is great for education and occupant engagement. We want the students and faculty to realize their small, everyday decisions do make a difference.

— Rob Richards, Energy Sustainability Manager at Wofford College

Challenges

  • Managing data from 74 buildings, 150+ meters, and 250+ utility accounts across 3 different systems
  • Properly identifying building uses and setting HVAC scheduling around them
  • Showing students, staff, and faculty that their energy decisions make a difference to campus consumption

Successes

  • Using BuildingOS Data Manager to help identify data gaps and inaccuracy, then working to backfill missing data
  • Creating custom cards and dashboards for classroom use to educate students about energy use
  • Setting up reports of weather-normalized, monthly bill data for facilities staff and the finance department to provide additional context for changes in consumption and cost patterns
  • Designing a Storyboard to summarize water and electric consumption and highlight sustainability efforts across campus, including green features, energy conservation projects, waste & recycling, and food waste recovery
